Edits vs CapCut: Instagram's free editor against the short-form default
Meta's Edits app is free and built for Reels; CapCut runs everywhere and has more templates and AI tools. How they compare on price, platforms, captions and editing talking-head videos.
Cover image: AI-generatedShort answer: if you post mainly to Instagram, Edits is the easier choice: it is free, made by Meta, exports without a watermark and keeps adding Reels-specific tools. If you post to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, edit on a computer as well, or rely on CapCut’s templates and AI features, CapCut is still the broader tool. Searches comparing the two have been rising through 2026, and for most Instagram-first creators the honest answer is that Edits now covers what they used CapCut for.

Where Edits wins
It is free, with no tiers to navigate. Every feature in the app is available without a subscription. Meta has said a paid “Edits Plus” plan will add cloud storage for syncing projects across devices (Meta); editing itself stays free.
It is built for Reels. Captions in two languages, beat markers for cutting to music, templates with overlays and lockable clips, project versions, and direct posting to Instagram (Instagram). Instagram’s Insights also show a skip rate for each Reel, which Edits’ tips connect directly to how you trim the start (Instagram).
It moves fast. Meta has shipped a steady run of updates since the app launched in April 2025: new effects, multiple takes for storyboards, links to Reels inside clips (Social Media Today). We summarised this year’s changes in the Instagram Edits app in 2026.
Where CapCut wins
Every platform. CapCut runs on phones, Windows, Mac and in the browser. Edits is mobile only. If you edit longer projects on a computer, that settles it.
The template and effect library. CapCut’s templates follow trends across TikTok, Reels and Shorts, and its effects, text animations and music library are deeper than Edits’.
AI features. CapCut ships new AI tools constantly, from captions to generative video, with the most powerful ones in the paid plans and credit-based (CapCut). Its desktop app also edits through a transcript, including one-click filler word removal (CapCut).
Neutral across platforms. CapCut does not favour one network. For creators who post the same video to TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels, an editor that is not tied to one of them can be simpler.
Talking-head videos in each
On a phone, both are timeline editors. To cut a talking head, you play the take, listen for each false start or repeated sentence, scrub to it, split and delete. Instagram’s First Draft, in the Reels flow, now removes pauses automatically (TechCrunch), and CapCut’s desktop app can strip filler words from its transcript. On the phone, neither shows you that you said a sentence twice.
Who should pick which
- Pick Edits if Instagram is your main platform, you edit on your phone and you want a free editor without a watermark.
- Pick CapCut if you post across several platforms, edit on a computer too, or depend on trend templates and AI tools.
- Use both if you like CapCut’s templates for some videos and Edits’ Instagram integration for others. Plenty of creators do.
A third option for talking-head videos
For videos that are mostly you talking, the slow step in both apps is the same: finding the cuts. slicecut does that step by text on iPhone and Android. Import the take, read the transcript, tap the words you want gone or drag across a sentence, and the cut lands right before the next word. One dial sets every pause to a target length. The export is rendered on the phone at source quality, without a watermark, ready to open in Edits or CapCut for captions and music.
